DANGER: Californians Lungs to be Ruined by
Spraying of Apple Moths starting June 2008

For those of you that have compromised lung problems especially, this is not good news at all! AND - don't think that because you are not in those areas currently being sprayed or going to be sprayed that it will not affect you because it will as the winds can carry these sprays easily over the mountains as in Santa Cruz to San Jose area and in time other areas can be sprayed as well! We are being treated as 'Guinea Pigs' folks and it is crucial that each and everyone of us speak up and contact our state representatives! - Shirley

Apple Moth Spraying Controversy on Joanie Greggains' Program
Dear Friends,
The e-mails and comments of support that I have received since I first mentioned the Light Brown Apple Moth and scheduled aerial spraying on my radio show made me realize that it is important for me to alert all those I know to help me spread the word before it is too late for all of us. When the California Department of Food and Agriculture contacted the station, I knew that they were hearing the protests from my listeners.
As you know, my entire career has been devoted to helping people achieve a healthier lifestyle. Ultimately, we must all take responsibility for our own health, but I have always tried to provide sound information with regard to exercise, proper diet, healthy lifestyle choices, etc. in order to empower my listeners to make these choices without sacrificing their health by believing false promises about quick fixes.
Today I find myself in a position where I feel my own health, your health, and the health of my listeners is threatened by the State of California in their plans to begin aerial spraying of CheckMate in order to, in the words of the CDFA (California Dept. of Food and Agriculture) in an e-mail sent to me: ".the need to eradicate it, and the benefits of doing so with a progressive approach featuring moth pheromone. In contrast to conventional pesticides that kill insects, moth pheromone doesn't even hurt the Light Brown Apple Moth."
This they intend to do by spraying multiple counties (Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin.) with moth pheromone - without having conducted environmental testing, or testing of the vehicle used for doing this, as safe for humans.
In other words, if you live in Sausalito, Tiburon, Corte Madera, San Mateo, Berkeley, Oakland, Orinda, Walnut Creek, Santa Cruz, Monterey, etc. - THIS AFFECTS YOU. We are talking about densely populated residential areas, not farmlands, orchards, and vineyards - You'll have NOWHERE TO HIDE.
The aerial application of Checkmate OLR-F and Checkmate LBAM-F is designed out of the concept of miniature plastic sphere-like particles, generally the same size as the width of a human hair. They are called microcapsules. Each capsule is a biologically "loaded gun" due to its own chemical make-up and that of the pheromones held inside. Research indicates that the capsules are likely made out of a urea-formaldehyde polymer, the industry standard. This is an extremely volatile plastic which, under UV rays, degrades over a time period estimated to be anywhere from 30-70 days. These "agricultural" microcapsules have never been tested safe for humans. Thus, the life of these microcapsules inside our bodies is truly unknown as are the health risks of inhaling or swallowing them. (Editor's note: Even the Australian Cancer Council has said that there is NO safe level of formaldehyde).
Preliminary research on the microcapsules have revealed that they are made of a new technology, and that the large capsules are made up of a cluster of smaller 3-4 micron size capsules - a size of capsule that can be deadly to humans over the long term.
Starting in June they plan to spray at least once a month and continue every month for the next two years until 2010!!!!
Can you IMAGINE WHAT THIS POSSIBLY CAN DO TO US HAVING TO BREATHE THIS INSIDE OUR LUNGS AND BODIES EVERY MONTH FOR TWO YEARS!!!
Have these people lost their senses, don't they care for our health? - apparently not! In addition, these pheromones will not kill the moths just confuse and disrupt their mating cycle. They can just as easily do this by putting these pheromones on sticky tapes tied to the trees, etc. plus other alternatives - Shirley)

Is this the California we know and love? Do you want to imagine eating grass-fed beef after the spraying, fishing after the spraying, organic produce after the spraying, your pet's water bowl after the spraying, your children playing at the park after the spraying? They tell us just to wash everything off - while telling us to conserve water.
Have we become so immune to what is going on that we are willing to let them "literally" shove this down our throats?
I recently attended my own city council meeting where they adopted a no-spray resolution, as have many other cities and towns within the spray areas. Yet, the CDFA almost laughs at us, saying in so many words that they will spray whether we like it or not.
